What Remains
Time passes and some things fade, like color on a polaroid photo; yet some things remain. In this installation series, I used the fact that polaroids fade as a metaphor, capturing moments, pushing us to see beyond what is altered by time (or by illness), to light up the essence of being and focus on what we cherish. This series is not only about the passing of time, but also about my own experience of navigating loss and how we construct, capture and hold on to memories as a way to connect us to people and places that transcend time and space.
The travelling exhibition launched in Brussels at Gallery 151 Grosvenor El Harar in September 2018 for Global Alzheimers Awareness Month. In every city, a new layer of the project will be created. After having been postponed due to Covid 19 it was in Lisbon in July 2021 at Square by Appleton and in 2022 A ilha and across the city in September through a new colored poster series created for the occasion. The exhibition serves to raise awareness and destigmitize Dementia.
You can also follow the unfolding project on Instagram.
Accompanying the exhibition is an art book that was successfully funded through a crowdfunding campaign online in June 2019 and which was designed in collaboration with Italian book designer and artist Carlotta Origoni. The book was created not only as an extension of the exhibition but also as a piece in itself, a play on paper of the form and colors of polaroids. The complete work offers a beautified glimpse into dementia, celebrating 14 people who have the illness.
The Book was selected for PrintMEking at Gate 44 art center in Milan, Italy in September 2019; the In Print Art Book Fair at Hansen House, Jerusalem, Israel in December 2019; and Oggeto Libro in Milan in 2021, and again at In Print in February 2022.
You can purchase the book in select Art book shops and directly here.
